A gas lighter runs on liquid butane that you refill yourself. That is the whole difference from a disposable lighter: the device lasts for years and all you buy after that is gas.
Within that the choice varies. A soft flame is calm and economical, a jet flame burns under pressure and does not blow out. The size decides whether it fits in your trouser pocket or stays standing on the worktop.
Disposable lighters are cheap to buy and expensive to use: you buy a handful a year and throw all of them away. A refillable gas lighter is topped up in a few seconds, and a well-kept one lasts for years as long as you fill it with clean gas.

If you are torn between a jet flame and a soft flame, let the place decide. Indoors with candles a soft flame wins because it does not blow the wick sideways, and outdoors or in a draught a jet flame is the only one that keeps going.
