Compact lighters that fit in a trouser pocket
A compact lighter is there for the places a large model cannot reach: a trouser pocket, a coat pocket, the glovebox or a toolbox. The smallest models here are under nine centimetres tall.
Small does not mean disposable with these models. Virtually everything here is simply topped up with butane gas, so you do not throw them away once the tank is empty.
When is small big enough?
For a cigarette, a candle or a fuse a small jet flame is more than enough. The compromise is in the tank: less capacity means refilling more often. If you use it daily you notice that, if you use it now and then you do not.
Size otherwise says nothing about the quality of the flame. A small jet flame is just as hot and just as wind resistant as a big one; the difference is purely in how much gas sits behind it.

Tank against size
A smaller body means a smaller tank. For daily use it pays to compare slightly bigger models, or to take a set so that you are never without one.
With or without a cap
A cap over the nozzle stops the button being pressed in your pocket and keeps dirt out of the burner. For a lighter that sits loose in a pocket that is no needless luxury.
Refill with butane gas at 45 PSI and wait a minute after filling. At lower pressure the flame starts to sputter and the valve clogs up.

If you tend to lose them, a set with several in it is cheaper per lighter and more practical than buying a new one every time.
Do not store a compact model loose among keys or coins. That presses the button in and damages the nozzle, and then a lighter with nothing else wrong with it is finished anyway.
