BBQ lighters for charcoal, briquettes and kamado

A BBQ lighter has to do two things: burn long enough to get the coals going, and keep burning in the wind. An ordinary lighter manages neither, and with lighter fluid you taste it back in the meat later.

The choice splits into two kinds: a lighter with a jet flame running on butane gas, or an electric one that blows hot air.

Which BBQ lighter suits your barbecue?

Charcoal and briquettes need time and oxygen. A soft flame blows away before the coal glows, and a match is gone before anything happens. A jet flame is blown out under pressure and keeps the heat on one spot, exactly what a briquette needs to catch.

Electric or gas

An electric lighter blows hot air and needs no fuel, but it does need a socket. A butane gas lighter works anywhere, including on the campsite or at the far end of the garden without an extension lead.

One flame or four

One jet flame is enough for a firelighter cube or a wool coil. Four flames make a wide hot cone with which you light the coals themselves and need no firelighter at all.

With a kamado or a closed barbecue

In a kamado or a closed kettle barbecue you have to get the flame in between the coals. So look at the length of the nozzle and whether you can lock the flame, so your hand does not have to hang over the embers.

Tip

Refill a BBQ lighter with butane gas at 45 PSI. Do it before the season starts, because pressure drops in the cold and a half-full tank shows immediately.

Buying a BBQ lighter at PyroProducts

This category holds BBQ lighters with one to four jet flames and an electric model that works on hot air. Nearly all refillable with butane gas, so they last for seasons.

The same lighter also does the fire pit, the fireplace and the stove. If you light mainly with firelighter cubes or wool coils, have a look at the BBQ accessories as well. If you want something that always keeps burning outdoors, those are with the storm lighters.

When comparing, look at the number of flames, the length of the nozzle, the size of the gas tank and whether it has a lock. The difference between firelighters is in wool coils or firelighter cubes.

If you are torn between electric and gas, let the place decide. At home on the terrace a socket is no obstacle, but on the campsite or at the far end of the garden it is. If you are often out and about, butane gas wins on size and convenience.

Frequently asked questions

Which lighter do you use for charcoal?

A model with a jet flame, preferably with several flames. It keeps the heat on one spot and does not blow out, so the coal starts glowing by itself. With one flame you usually light a firelighter cube or a wool coil first.

Can you light a barbecue without lighter fluid?

Yes, and it tastes better. With a four-flame torch you hold the coals under fire for half a minute until they glow in a few places. After that the draught does the rest. That way you do not taste fuel in the meat.

What is the difference between an electric and a gas lighter for the BBQ?

The electric one blows hot air and needs no fuel, but it does need power. A butane gas lighter works anywhere and stores away smaller. At home power is no obstacle, on the campsite it is.

Which gas do you use for a BBQ lighter?

Butane gas at 45 PSI. At lower pressure the jet flame burns unevenly and the valve clogs up sooner. Fill calmly, hold the lighter upright and wait a minute before you light it.

Does a BBQ lighter work in a kamado too?

Yes, as long as the nozzle is long enough to get in between the coals. Check as well whether the flame can be locked, so you do not have to hold the button down while your hand hangs over the embers.

How long does it take before the coals are ready?

Count on about twenty minutes between lighting and an even glow with a grey layer of ash. Briquettes take longer than charcoal, but they also burn on for much longer afterwards.
